What is "good hair?"

I have to address the term "good hair." I am a stylist who loves and appreciates ALL textures. In the last month or so, I had three clients explain to me that they don’t have “good hair."  I had to ask them what is “good hair?" No matter my client's hair texture, they describe a texture that is completely opposite of their own. Not only do they describe a hair texture very different from their own, they have horror stories about when they tried achieve different textures.

For example, one client with tightly coiled and kinky hair wanted a curlier texture. She incorrectly applied a texturizer that left her hair very damaged. Another client liked to wear her hair straight, but she had very curly hair. She had a lot of heat damage from overusing flat irons.

I encourage women to embrace their hair texture regardless.  Because you love and embrace your hair, when you choose to alter your texture you should choose only the healthiest options for your hair.

I have conversed with other stylist about texture and “good hair” and they all feel the same way I do. But unfortunately, there may be a lot of stylist who don’t. It’s important to educate your self and learn more about your texture and how to care for it. I was happy to find this book “Hair Rules” by A. Dickey. A.Dickey and I have similar views when it comes to texture. He is a successful celebrity stylist who works with ALL textures. He quotes,“There is really no such thing as "good hair” or “bad hair." Healthy hair trumps all textures and types.”  I ask all of you to embrace your texture no matter what texture it is. Not only do you have the potential to have “good hair”, with love and care, GREAT hair is on the horizon.
